eSchool News
phase-6 discussed its new web-based product aimed at
helping students commit newly learned vocabulary to long-term memory. Based on work by the German
brain researcher Hermann Ebbinghaus (1850-1909) and his theories about how people retain and forget
information over time,
phase-6 uses multimedia flash cards and repetitions at
specified intervals to support long-term recall. Started about six years ago, the company reports
having broad success in Germany, with use by some 240,000 students. As the company now moves into
the U.S. market, it is testing its system in two California high schools and expects to announce
additional pilot projects soon.

Pilot Project with Pearson Longman
phase-6 is excited to participate in Pearson Longman's pilot study testing their new North
Star Series. Longman´s instructional materials include vocabulary components which will be
delivered using
phase-6´s Web-delivered pilot version 2.0. A division of Pearson Education, Longman is the
leading publisher of language programs for middle and high school students, as well as adult
learners in English as a Second Language.
New Product Launch in Germany
Until recently,
phase-6 in Germany was only available as a stand-alone CD version, or integrated into a
local area network. The new browser-based v2.0 is currently being released in Germany and allows
users to conveniently download
phase-6, instead of having to deal with CDs.
Future Development Efforts and CPS Project
Product development efforts on a global scale
have already been mapped out for the years to come. New releases of v2.1 and v2.2 can be expected
within the coming year with free updates for existing users. In an effort to serve local needs and
to adapt to different educational systems,
phase-6 continues to incorporate user feedback and runs pilot projects in the Chicago
Public Schools (CPS) and South Africa to inform product development. The CPS project is scheduled
to start in October.
Finalization of Elk Grove / Pleasant Grove Pilot Project
Both schools have been part of a
pilot project from March to June 2007 involving a total of approximately 600 students. While no
statistical analysis of test results has been conducted yet, individual teachers report on
phase-6´s impact:
"The level of differentiated instruction for the students is wonderful as students who
achieve higher will be able to access more and more terms at a faster rate, while those students
who struggle can go at their own pace. ... Now, with the teacher report, I know exactly who has
been studying and for how long. It is a great assessment tool. ... Without exception, I can say
that all my students that have used
phase-6 regularly all agree that it helped them. Students who were "F" and "D" students
have increased their grades on not only vocabulary quizzes, but also the chapter tests which have
all the vocabulary from the chapter."

phase-6 Online Edition is the second generation of the
phase-6 engine that assists students in locking information into long-term memory. Our
Online Edition,
phase-6 2.0, incorporates new designs as well as additional features.
- One new feature is a set of reporting tools that allows teachers to see how much time
individual students spent practicing, identify study items that caused the most difficulty, and to
detect cheating. This enables teachers to design a more student-focused and differentiated style of
teaching.
